My Frivolous Things

Rock n’ roll music and my little kiddies
Pink platform boots and a black vinyl mini
A flying V strung with six nylon strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Neon eye shadow and black liquid liner
Tight jeans made up by my favorite designer
A skull that’s engraved in a big silver ring
These are a few of my favorite things.

Writing and blogging and bad poetry
Bands from the 80s with hair to their knees
New York in summer London in the spring
These are a few of my favorite things

When someone’s late, when I can’t sleep
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember a chocolate cake
And then I don’t feel so bad.

Repeat ad nauseam.

This is my take on the love hate challenge. Thank you to Kim Boxin and Paola from Doted On for nominating me.

By popular demand, I have added a video of my performing the song live. It was a real rush job for which I apologize in advance but, at the very least, have a laugh on me.

  1. This is much better that the Sound of Music song. Come to think of it, shouldn’t someone be doing a re-make of that? BTW, just wondering, do you ever write songs for your son?

    • I was actually going to do a vlog of this one with me performing it but I was too wiped out this week.
Yes, I actually wrote a couple of songs for my son but now he’s into this really heavy heavy metal (which isn’t the style of music I write) and we’re encouraging him to write his own songs. So far he’s just got a few fragments.

      • For me, someone offered the kids a week of free music camp which is great but a big commute so picking them up after work and driving all the way home!! Then doing chores!! Also, it’s my son’s last full week of school and we’re trying to get all his assignments in and he keeps messing them up. (He homeschools so is doing this while in camp!!) And then I had jury duty yesterday!!! Sorry to vent. Glad you are feeling better now and hopefully catching up quickly!

      • Yuck! Jury duty! I dread whenever I call them. Last time it got cancelled. Whew!
After this week you can breathe again! Hang in there!

      • I know, really! You’re so lucky it got cancelled. When I got there, there was no air conditioning or working elevators in the building but unfortunately, it was repaired!

    • You know, I did consider that but both of my trips to London were taken in the spring and for one of them, the weather was quite beautiful…better than NY when I got back there!

      • Oh my goodness, it was so long ago, I don’t really remember where I stayed although I can tell you that both times it was at a friend’s house (different both times) nearer to the outskirts). We took the train in every day and went out to Camden a lot, clubs and shopping. Also Portobello Rd. and Kings Rd. Did a lot of shopping and clubbing and not too much sight seeing!!

    • I quite agree. I just looked over the list and thought about how shallow I must seem and decided to give an appropriate title…although anyone who reads the blog probably knows that anyway.

  2. SOM is my FAVOURITE of all time! I love that you did this verse! How very creative you are bringing it up to date!

    • Yes, well, the guys in the video had a similar idea…although I really think they should have changed the lyrics too. I was going to do a vlog with me singing and playing guitar but it’s been such a crazy week…I couldn’t get it together!

  3. This was mostly the highs and favorites and you are so good at not detailing too many of the ‘bads’ in your life. I liked the 70’s music but listen to almost all the time periods. I am excited to know you are/were a rocker, I like this about you. Makes you stand out in “my crowd!”

  4. As soon as I started reading this, I had a feeling it was your spin on love/hate. I freaking loved it! I’m with you on not being big on the blogging awards. It’s just not my cup of tea, but I love the challenges. I can not wait for you to post a vlog with you singing and playing. I know you’re wiped out, but please do it soon!

    • I’m glad you like it! Yes, challenges are inspiration so why not? Really it’s been a terrible week! Usually I’m not flakey about these things. I should get the vlog together and re-blog (blog??) maybe next week.

      • I’m sorry you’ve had a rough week. Flakey? No one thinks you’re flakey. I don’t have half the responsibilities you do, and I’m always amazed at what a prolific blogger you are. I’m still trying to catch up on reading blog posts from last week. Re-blog your vlog or create a new blog whenever you can. I’m just excited about watching the video. 😍

      • Oh thanks for the vote of confident. I hate it when people use excuses like I was too tired but this week really took it out of me…commuting kids and jury duty…I’ll be so glad when it’s over!!

    • Yes, it’s really a shame that it didn’t go on to do better things. I’m thinking that Maria really could have left the convent for her love of platform boots, mini skirts and long haired rockers.

    • I welcome you to try if you’re so inclined. I never like to pass on challenges to other people, and make them feel obligated, but if you really want to, I could edit this to nominate you. No pressure though.

  5. I LOVED the video Marissa!! I’m trying to catch up, it’ll take forever 🙂
I read the poem a few weeks ago and today I saw a video and needed to check it out!
    Perfect!! 🙂

    • That’s so funny Paola! I added the video and then was going to reblog but saw that I had to actually find the post on my page first so I got lazy about it, then thought the video wasn’t so great anyway since I really did a rush job on it. Anyway, I was still kind of thinking of reblogging but then totally forgot about it…until now! Glad you liked it!
