Snowball wouldn’t bat at socks
Or deign to use the litter box
She’d no use for that feline stuff
Tried making her meow a ruff
Her mother neared end of her whits
And wished her dear would only quit
But it was neither whim nor hobby
A canine in a feline’s body
And though her mom would fret and kvetch
Snowball brought a stick to fetch
Preferred to chase round the mailman
Then digging through a garbage can
She rather liked to chew one bones
Which beefed up her testosterone
But the elusive canine copy
Never did her ears go floppy
Nor could she seek an operation
To change the outcome of gestation
But other cats, Snowball they feared
And dogs, well they just found her weird
And rolled their eyes as they walked past
So poor Snowball was an outcast
And so a loner til that day
When all alone Snowball did play
Until the day she ran across
A cow who was born as a horse.
I have a cat who thinks he’s a dog. You always entertain
I’m not surprised. I’m sure there are quite a few. In fact, I have a friend who’s cats are dog like in that they are very friendly.
Cats are amazing bur dogs are great too
I have a cat like that too. And I have one that thinks he’s a rat. Loves cheese. And another that thinks she is a duck. She loves water.
Do you have any who think they are cars?
One likes to chase cars. Course that’s the one who thinks she’s a dog. And not just any don’t. She thinks she’s a German Shepherd, so she chases police cars.
Well, if you’re going to go there, might as well be particular…
Haha!
Snowball’s got lot of dog friends! I wonder if she longs for walks?
Yes, for sure. I was going to add a line about how she likes to go out on a leash and then actually follows her owner but I thought I did enough damage in the verses I had, ha, ha!
You are constantly breaking new ground 🙂
Nor could she seek an operation
To change the outcome of gestation
You are the first to tackle trans-species 🙂
You think? It was actually inspired by my daughter acting like a cat and then, little by little, her meows turned into ‘ruffs’.
… and where did she get her inspiration for free-form improvisation? Mom? 😉
Ha, ha! You think??
I sure loved this poetry.
Thank you!
Well young Marissa, I’ve heard the phrase ‘sex-change’ but ‘species-change’ affords all of us a whole new world of possibilities!
Yes, i was trying to think of a term closer to gender bending incorporated for a species but no such luck!
I like cats…more than dogs, much to the distain of my dog loving wife ad son. Cats don’t need anyone to get by.
I tend to agree. As soon as I found out they are born knowing how to use a litter box, my choice was obvious.
The self-same thing ensured my mother loved me
Hey diddle diddle, if the cow was a horse, you think it could really jump over the moon? 😜
Nice & funny!
Of course not! Only true cows can jump over the moon!
😆
OH this is just too cute!!! I just let my cats be cats although, when my Karma was still with us, he used to follow me like a dog. Whenever we went to the Vet he was not in a carrier. He walked following me. You have no idea the comments and the looks we got. Too funny!! How I miss that Angel of mine. But it seems I can talk about him now without crying. I’ve made progress. 🙂 ❤
That’s great and glad to have evoked a fond memory. I’m sure there are many cats with dog like personality traits!
I want my cats to be cats. That’s just me. Karma and I just had a very unique and deep bond. He taught me so much about Love and Trust. I’m grateful he is no longer suffering. He left a great legacy in this house. ❤
I’m sure he did. You were lucky to have had him, and he you.
Haha… all those identification issues even in the animal world😄
I wouldn’t doubt it!
Haha… I loved your poem. Such a fantastic metaphor 😄
We all have our own personalities. Consider that The Donald could have ben trapped in my body.
I thought he was…
This is the only poetry blog i read. Maybe because it’s so much fun.
Thank you Craig! That means a lot!
I used to dislike cats for years. Then one day, I had visited a home where there were 2 cats. One was slim and stayed by the windows, real standoff-ish, like most cats I always thought were. The other cat, though, was chubby and absolutely acted like friendly dogs I’ve met. It hopped on my lap, played around, wanted a tummy rub, and so on. I totally thought it was just like a dog. So since then, I’ve become a new sort-of cat lover. I had asked that friend years later, how that cat was. She said that the owner had moved, so she didn’t know. Ah…I always wished I had a cat like that one. Great post!
I have a friend who had cats who were friendly like dogs. It’s kind of funny. Awesome that you were able to have a relationship with one, however brief it may have been.
Sounds like my kind of cat!
I think it might just be the best of both worlds… like a dig that uses the litter box!
I’ve never had a cat in my life. But I have been around my friends cat, and their cute and they sometimes do act like dogs sometimes.
There very playful and so mysterious at times. 🙂
I’ve had cats. They can be pretty snooty at times but every once in a while you come across one that is doglike and friendly.
One day I’ll get a cat of my own. I would like to own one and observe so see how much of a doglike the cat would act. 🙂
Snowball found her peeps!!!!! 🙂
That she did!
Yep! My kind of cat.
Best of both worlds!
This was obviously adorable. It’s so nice reading your natural comedic flowy poetry. I know I’ve said it over and over, but here it is again because it’s just so true … You are seriously talented!
My family had a weird dog that I believe thought she was a cat. I thought this mostly because the weirdo liked humping other cats. A female dog who humped ours and all the neighborhoods poor cats. Her name was Princess, but she definitely should have been named, “Stop doing that!”
Hope you’re enjoying what’s left of 2016 🙂
Ha! That’s too funny! I’ve heard of a lot of cats that act like dogs but not so much the other way around! Thank you for your kind words as well.
And somewhere there is cat in a dog’s body going “what the hell!”
Ha, ha! I’m sure it works both ways.
Haha…too funny!
Love it! My cat is definitely a cat, but raised with our dogs so has many of their characteristics. For one, she hates the litterbox and insists on going outside to do her business, even in winter. Her growl sounds a lot like a dog, too. 🙂
Pretty funny! As long as she’s house trained,..
I also have a cat that acts like a dog. He is very laid back and when I go to walk the dog, he will follow us off if I’m not careful. Then, of course, I have cats that act like true cats, ha ha!
Ever try putting him on a leash…ha, ha! It would be funny to see if he could actually be walked like a dog!
I haven’t for him, but there is a lady in my mom’s apartment complex that walks her cat on a leash!
Wow, and the cat actually follows?
He does, ha ha. He is a large, comical cat, and his name is Big Boy, lol!
this is such magical post, wonderful words and clip,,,bravo!!
Thank you Mihrank!
My first husband had hound dogs and a cat named Barney. Barney caught ping pong balls, chased tennis balls and ate dog food. This was another clever, funny poetic jewel! Marissa, kvetch and fetch is such a great rhyme, as you just know how to create the really good stuff! 😀
Thank you! Well, I guess if a cat grows up around dogs they are even more likely to catch on to some of their personality traits.
They do take on their “role models” ha ha 😀
This just tickled me. With two of each, I see many similarities. Both are top predators after all.
That’s true…and the most common domestic animals! Thank you April!
I was so happy to read this and enjoy a little laugh with my coffee. Always love your little, surprise twists at the end. 🙂
Thank you Olga! Just don’t spit the coffee all over the room when you laugh!
Ha ha! I know. A dangerous combination. Drinking and laughing. I’ve learned my lesson with eating and laughing. 🙂
Fab poem. Can totally relate with the dog-cat thing. They’re the best kind. Also pleased to find Snowball happily matched with the cow – horse. It takes all sorts as they say….
I suppose so! Thanks for the kind words!
Haha, sounds like there’s a bit of a complex going on here? Let’s call in Freud 🙂
Ha, ha! Great idea!
This is hilarious! I’ve never had a cat but I’d love to have one who thinks she’s a dog!
I just posted about my dog. Do give it a read – https://himadri7.wordpress.com/2017/01/22/my-love-bruno-%e2%9d%a4
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it!.
