Hello friends of the blogging world! The Rock n’ Roll Supermom has been doing some calendar consulting and I realize that I’m coming up on my 3 year blogiversary and you know what that means… I look nothing like my profile picture anymore. It also means I am getting pretty burned out on blogging so I’m taking a break. I may publish if a moment of brilliancy hits, but I’m actually going to try not to. I need to refuel. I will still be reading your blogs but maybe not to the point that I had been.

From June 7-14 I will be going on a spiritual pilgrimage to the holy city of New York. There I will be undergoing a metaphysical rejuvenation which will consist of shopping therapy, the ingestion of sacrificial chocolates and pizza, and deep healing sessions with Subway Station Stan. It is during this time that I will be away from the blogging world completely, so you probably shouldn’t even bother publishing anything during this time (mark your calendars). When I come back from this soul searching journey, I may be blogging less or experimenting with different formats and genres which may or may not include a collection of zen writings in limerick form.

On a more serious note, I have not been back to NY since pre-911 so if anyone has any recommendations as far as non-touristy things to do, and relatively inexpensive places to eat and (thrift) shop, I’d love to hear. I’ll be staying in Harlem and plan to spend a lot of time in the East Village and some visiting the boroughs. I don’t think many of you are from the area but if you are and would like to meet up, let me know.

  4. Oh, sure–now that I’m back, you’re taking a break. Figures. Well, I can’t say as I can blame you–I haven’t made nearly the investment in original content you’ve done, and the refreshment of focusing elsewhere was wonderful. At least there is plenty of your old stuff for me to roam back through. As for the recent pic, looking good. We’re around the same age–I wish my decline was half as graceful.

  7. Wishing you tons of love and happiness as you make your pilgrimmage. Unfortunately, I’ve only been to NYC once…and spent my touristy time down at Ground Zero. I cried for the next three days. That’s probably not in a guidebook.
    Recharge, rejuvenate and have fun. I will miss you while you’re gone, but am not going anywhere. Take care, my friend!

    • Thanks Michelle! I have friends who I lost in 9 11 and am debating whether or not to visit. I’ve heard some people who are reluctant to see these types of memorials but end up being glad they went but I’m still on the fence. I don’t think my family wants to go.

      As for your offer to publish on Hummingbird, might be a good idea. I’m probably overthinking it, but just feel like there’s an expectation on me to write something funny that also has a sort of punchline and I just can’t do it 3 times a week which is getting depressing. The idea of being able to spread my wings in an anonymous setting sounds appealing. I just may take you up on that one!

      • That’s exactly why I have Hunmingbird. I’m usually sunshine and butterflies at my main blog, and it’s disingenuous to write that way when I’m not feeling it. My place is your place…even at the spur of the moment.
        I am so sorry you lost friends on 9/11. I can’t even imagine. As for visiting, I think you’ll know exactly what to do when the time comes – you’re metaphysical that way ❤️

  11. Have a good visit. It’s been a while since I’ve been there, and I feel the pull. Also, I applaud your decision to pause and, perhaps, move your efforts into different directions. It’s hard to make that kind of change, but necessary if you want to keep growing creatively. Gotta go bungie jumping every now and then. 🙂

  13. Wow, happy three-year! I’ll miss seeing your stuff for awhile, but I understand the need for a break. And I’m completely jealous of your pilgrimage to the holy land! I was there around this time two years ago, and it’s the perfect time to go. Unfortunately, all of the suggestions I can think of are pretty touristy, so I don’t think I have any unique ideas to offer you 🙂 I do recommend trying food from the street carts, though!

    • Well, I’m from NY so I’ve done the food cart thing. I haven’t been back in 16 years but that’s one thing I don’t think would change…the dirty water hot dogs. Maybe with some queso?

      • I’ve actually never had a hot dog from a food cart haha. But in Chinatown, there were these weird donut-pancake things, and they were kind of awesome. Queso makes everything better though, so it’s worth a try!

      • I never had those in Chinatown. I’m not sure if we’ll be back there. It wasn’t really my fave, just kind of the place you went if you needed cheap materials. If I do make it back there though, I’ll be on the lookout!

I’ve often marveled at how you’ve sustained this blog with all of the commitments that you have, and I’m just repeating myself.     • Ah, re the profile pic, you’re too kind… No REALLY! Yeah, we used to do Sbarro in Brooklyn when I was a kid. It’s good but it doesn’t hold a candle to St. Marks pizza!

    • I need to rethink and refuel. I really can’t force myself back because it’s too hard for me to keep coming up with poems that I don’t think are up to par. I’ll have to see what happens. Are you close to NY then? Didn’t know. Where are you?

  30. So tell me if I have got the right. You are getting ready to campaign to be the next mayor of the Big Apple. This is just a preamble to what should be a highly effective campaign tour. I can see the Times with the headline: Rock ‘n’ Roll Supermom Returns to Take the Mayor’s Office. I might even sneak into the City myself and vote. Anyway enjoy your campaigning.   32. Ah, New York City! This is a good time to go. Don’t lose yourself in that great energy. Tudor City Place, not far from the United Nations Bldg. up the stairs overlooking the East River, has a small park where the few who know about it go to eat their lunch weekdays. It is its own community, with some stores. I hope it still has its own post office. I lived there until I was about five years old and remember playing in one of the two parks . My mother lived there for 28 years at one time. Now, I hear, there is only one park and more little shops. The Circle Line trip is still a thrill. Have a fantastic time!

    • Well Washington Square and Tomkins Square should both still be there. I never heard of the one that you are referring to but was very much rooted to the East Village. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion Patricia!

    • Yes, well I haven’t been to Boston in a while and don’t recall eating any pizza there although, the answer is most probably obvious as you say. I did however, manage to get banned from a popular club there due to my drummer being intoxicated.

      • Ha, ha! She was a girl and actually kind of a sad story because she really did have a drug and drinking problem which wasn’t very apparent at first. I hear she is okay now though.

    Are you perhaps considering transplanting the whole family,? I will cheer you and your Bergen family on, for the best vacation ever!!

      • Of course, Marissa! The Bergen Family likes traveling together and I remember a few months ago, you had me so excited. Now, I have a bit of sadness attached, due to less Super Rock (metal, too) and Roll, more Mom!!
        You will all have a blast in New York. I found the stores to be interesting but had to ask for help to take me to the best Italian or Greek food with lower costs. My subway trips were made with a partner along once grown up, with parents as a middle school aged daughter. My brothers and I liked the “automat” and FAO Schwartz toy aisles! 🙂

      • I’ve actually been taking a lot of the time off writing to promote my band so I’m more rock n’ roll than ever ! Ha, ha!
        I remember the subways vaguely but I know they are sending some of the lines over different tracks. It was always my MO to take trains I was familiar with to the nearest stop and get out and walk from there. To me, it’s easier than driving. We did get an app on my phone that’s kind of a GPS for subways though.
        I loved FAO Schwartz too. Too bad it’s closed now.

      • Well, I guess the world cannot afford all those high end toys but it was sure a fun place to visit. I think that Tom Hanks played the floor keyboard in the movie, “Big,” at FAO Schwartz.
        I am so excited about your extra time to write more music, Marissa. Hope you had the best vacation ever!! 🙂 🙂

  41. Enjoy your time off. We’ll miss you. On the 11th I’ll be in Philadelphia which is much closer to NYC than my home in New York. Sounds like you’ve got a great trip planned. I can’t believe you haven’t been back since pre-9/11. Hiding from something are we? Witness protection maybe?

As to cheap, I’m not Chinese but I understand you can’t get any cheaper than Chinatown for dine-out and shopping therapy. Sarah Jessica Parker’s fav place to shop – I once saw on the gym TV.   49. I highly recommend refueling, Marissa. Blogging can and does burn you out. In my pulling back from WP, I realized how much of LIFE I had been missing and now I am changing how I blog. I will not sit at a computer for hours especially now that the beautiful weather is here. Have fun in NY and enjoy yourself.
