Edith worked the overnights
She sat there all alone
With nought a one for comp-ny but
His relaxed dulcet tones
That somehow did emit a sort of
Subtle sexy growl
And she would join immodestly
For his signature howl
“A whooo this is the sly dog here
I tell you I don’t bite
But I’ll bark and growl and take you
Through the lonely night
We got some Pistols coming soon
And then the Violent Femmes
So be sure to tune in right here
At KHY FM!”
And Edith listened as Sly Dog
Would play her favorite tunes
Pretending he spoke straight to her
Beneath the waning moon
She’d answer all his questions and
Converse quite easily
With the voice she found on her
Radio frequency
But one day Edith spoke to Dog
Near had a heart attack
Because dear Edith was quite sure
That Sly Dog answered back
And she tested her theory sure
That something was amiss
Until he said it loud and clear
“Hey what it be, Edith?”
From that day on they chatted so
‘Bout all that suits their fancy
Like whether the Foos were all that
And whether Sid killed Nancy
And whether it’s Beatles or Stones
Or if Kurt’s recognition
Would be so if he hadn’t died
Or Fender over Gibson
And times when it was just about
The sun was due to rise
They’d get all philosophical
And just talk about life
Then one night Edith came to work
To Sly Dog said “Hello”
But there would be no answer back
She thought “Where did he go?”
She tried to find what happened but
All her attempts were thwarted
When she found that all Sly Dog’s shows
Were always prerecorded
But Edith bound back quickly
And not one to be depressive
Now she swears her new best friend
Is Flo from Progressive
This poem is dedicated to Wolfman Jack, Rodney Bingenheimer and all the overnight deejays who were there before overnight meant prerecorded.
Also thanks to Syl at Syl65’s Blog for his poem 10:55: You’re On The Air for inspiration.
And tonight on University Challenge Marissa will be answering questions on contemporary music!
As long as contemporary includes everything released before 1985, we should be okay. I was considering posting the following on my FB status:
“I’ve decided I should start listening to more new music. Think I’ll start with the 90’s.”
Marissa…never, not ever the 90’s…rubbish period. I think contemporary music started with the electric guitar, the pill and copious quantities of a substance that shall not be named!
Yes, well you see why I stopped listening in the mid 80s and then basically tuned out everything else…but there was some good stuff out there. Now I’m finding it very difficult to sift through.
There’s some brilliant stuff about this last decade I think.
Some…though I don’t think it will ever be as good as it was. BTW, I’m a terrible music snob!!
So am I. Remember I can wax lyrical about Joni, Chen, Dylan and of course Billy Bragg…Shirley only likes Billy out of that bunch and we have battles when driving as she always wants Rammstein on! How fair is that?
Well I can’t say I blame her…
It is breakfast time here and coincidentally Rammstein is playing! So loud…mind it’s her birthday so I can’t complain (today anyway)!
No, not allowed today Mike!!
I do like Rammstein but not that early, not that loud…their America number is diamond stuff! Have you heard it?…by the way my son was upstairs today converting that Mark Foster number we’ve spoken about before…the Pumped Up Kicks one…to heavy metal…it was a rather special moment and I have forgiven him for being too much like me in day to day stuff!
Well, I do like the lyrics to the Foster the People song so definitely wouldn’t mind a metal version. As for Rammstein, I’ve heard them but couldn’t say what it was I was listening to. My son and husband are fans.
Hey Marissa, you’re real good for a laugh! Love your free & easy style!
All I really hope for is a laugh. Hope to brighten your Monday, thanks!
You have, indeed! TY! 😄
Wolfman Jack! Overnight radio is all prerecorded and the same commercials over and over. This is a great, Marissa!
So true! Glad you enjoyed Syl. BTW, did you see shout out? Thank you for your inspiration.
You’re welcome and thank you! I enjoyed it and the shout out!
The spirit of radio lives on! Used to listen to it all day all night and visit them all the time. Miss those days…
I know. They were like friends. Kind of sad.
It is! Though if I could have another shot at life, deejaying would still be cool.
This is really very emotive and brings back some “Late night radio” days, or nights I suppose, with great clarity because the DJ almost does seem to be speaking to you sometimes
Yes, especially late at night when you felt like no one was listening except for your. Those deejays were like old friends.
Haha… hey so cool! Again I love the way you build this all up and then give it that twist right in the end!!!
Yes, well really just trying to capture the feel of listening to a late night deejay. The twist was sort of my signature add on. Thanks Erika!
Typically, Marissa, that is what I always so love about your poems.
Marissa, I sent you something over your contact page. No hurry, but did you get it?
Uh…no.
Oh no, I even sent you an email! It was about the 5th and 6th of November. I asked if you see a chance we could meet then.
Hmmm. Well email is marissabergen602@gmail.com. I would love to meet you Erika! I’m sure that whatever is going on those days I can find a way so that we can get together. I do work those days though, until 2:30 so hopefully later in the day will be okay.
Oh that is cool. I copied the address and you can delete it again. I saw that I sent it to that address. So I sent it again. 🙂
Okay, I see it now. I’m sure I can make this work somehow. Looking forward to it.
Great! Carolina also says she could make it happen. I’d say as soon as you know what day and time would work best for you, let me know and we can see where we meet best 🙂
not everything changes for the better.
I try not to dwell on it, but sadly a lot of things do not improve. Where have all the good times gone?
Time to make some new good times.
Poor Edith. Stood-up in epic style.
Ha! Yes, I guess not everyone gets to be stood up by a deejay!
I was a big radio fan back in the day..in my community that was nightly entertainment for teens, yes back when there was a DJ. Poor Edith. I love Wolfman, especially the American Graffiti movies!
I feel like I need to watch American Graffiti again, maybe with the kids. Can’t remember how age appropriate it was but I think I watched it when I was really young. I used to listen to Metal Shop every Friday night. I still remember a lot of their cue in music.
I can’t remember offhand how age appropriate it was either. There are two of those movies, and I liked the second one quite a bit also.
Honestly, it’s been so long I can’t remember much other than that it was a big hit in my household and involved the late night adventures of teenagers.
This was a wonderful tribute Melissa. Took me back to WKRP in Cincinnati days. 😉
WKRP in Cincinnati! No way! Dr. Johnny Fever! Venus Flytrap! Loni Anderson!
Oh yes! I loved this show and the cast was awesome and fun! Colleen, you really added something I had forgotten for some time. Marissa, your poem was really strong in its fantastic rhythm and phrasing. I love how posts get piggy backed with memories and layers of details. . .
Yes, that’s why the comments are so great Robin! What a fantastic show! I still remember some of the quotes!
It was such a good show Robin. My head went there as soon as I read this. 🙂
Marissa, I loved Wolfman Jack and there was a great man in Cleveland who caught my interest and had the whiskey sounding voice which captured my heart. Central Ohio has Dino and Stacy in the morning but I do like Dino. He helps Children’s Hospital in Columbus and Felicia and I met him once. I dated an AM Radio guy called, “The Hawk” (Mike Hawkins) who liked broadcasting and giving the play by plays in sports. Only thing which affected our relationship was the fact he went to a holy roller church and was kind of “preachy.” He is a good man and I am sure he found someone else, more like him. 🙂
Oh yes, that would have been a deal breaker for me for sure but all for those interesting times don’t you think? It’s easy to develop a crush on a radio personality. But there is an expression, ‘he has a face made for radio’ so we do have to be careful…although it’s what’s on the inside that counts…well for the most part! LOL
For the most part, I agree with this. He was okay, no problem with his above average looks. I had fun for awhile until some strange thought processes developed like spitting into a barrel evil thoughts, seriously rolled down the aisle of his church. I may have “defamed” holy rollers since they would probably wonder about this practice, too. Ha ha ha…
Sounds like a scene from the exorcist. These things can get crazy I suppose!
reminds me of my own love for radio in school days, used to spend hours alone, keeping it close to ears, listening to different frequencies…
Yes, it’s funny how these deejays can become friends. Thank you Praveen!
true…this made me happy and sad together…so thank you!!! 🙂
As a former DJ (who did a few stints on overnight!), i can relate to this completely – although, I like to believe I was more the Wolfman character than Edith… hahaha! Great poem, and you are so right! Times they have changed!!!! (P.S, – This will probably pee off a whole lot of fans, but, like James Dean, Kurt is revered in large part because of his early demise…. had he lived long enough to fade, he would be long gone. Sorry, my friends! It’s just one hen’s opinion.)
Interesting Doreen! I never knew you deejays. That must have been a lot of fun. As for Kurt, 100% agree, which is pretty much why I put it in the poem, but, yes, let’s keep that between the two of us. Ha, ha!
Good work! It’s the Beatles for me!
Me too! Thanks Benjamin!
Boy, this sure brings back memories. I grew listening to late night 50,000 watts coming across the border from Mexico. Man, those were the glory days. In the seventies, there was a tv show, WKRP in Cincinnati, that did homage to those late night djs. Man, I miss the Venus Flytraps and Johnny Fever types who only wanted to give the audience great music.
Oh yes, there’s been a bit of a thread on WKRP over here. We are all missing Johnny and Venus!!
Man, this makes me feel nostalgic. Calling into request songs and then feeling like a celebrity when the deejay dedicated it to you…
Oh yeah! I can’t remember if that ever happened to me, but I did get to talk to Kiss on the air and my sister won Iron Maiden and Ramones tickets.
This made me feel sentimental and warm. I could hear Wolfman Jack’s voice as I read the stanzas. How many nights I stayed up listening to the radio…with my tape recorder microphone held to the speaker so I could catch an extra dose of Air Supply or Pablo Cruise….
The radio was much more of a late night friend before it was all prerecorded, don’t you think? I’m glad I could bring a few people down memory lane with this one.
